Things to know about Lycra and Spandex
June 23, 2009
The information below applies to all products that have Lycra/Spandex in them like swimwear, tri, run and bike gear as well as some yoga apparel. (This list is not inclusive of all Lycra or spandex containing garments. Lycra is a registered Trademark of Invista.)
1. The Bag-and-Sag Phenomenon: Do not wash Lycra or Spandex fiber containing garments in hot water. Hot water and hot surfaces burn the Lycra or spandex fibers, leaving the material bagging, sagging and see-through after a short period of time.
2. Avoid drying the garments in the dryer, do not place them near or on a heater or any other heat radiating appliance.
3. Chlorine and salt water are poison when it comes to Lycra or spandex. Swimming pools are chlorinated to kill germs. Chlorine is a bleach that will make the color of the garment fade and contribute to the bag-and-sag phenomenon.
4. Avoid rough surfaces such as rocks, stone walls or pool sides (list not inclusive of all rough surfaces you might come across). Lycra and Spandex fibers are delicate and will fray when they are rubbed against rough surfaces repeatedly.
You can find the above tips by looking at swimming forums and websites with information about Lycra and Spandex.
